Tired Employees Look for the “Easy” Way Out

We’ve all experienced one of those summer days when the weather is absolutely perfect and all we want to do is escape from the office and enjoy the sun – perhaps to take a run in the park or enjoy a drink of some sunny terrace in the city center. But instead, we must sit inside our offices and do a series of difficult tasks or sit through monotonous meetings. The experience of suppressing a desire (e.g., enjoying a sunny day) for a long period of time leads to a state that scientists term, “ego depletion.” In a state of ego depletion two things have been shown to happen: (1) we find tempting things (e.g., delicious foods) more desirable and harder to resist and (2) we like things that are easy. Darja Carl heeft de Best Research Dissertation Proposal Award van de ANZAM (Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management) voor beste onderzoeksvoorstel gewonnen. Carl is promovenda aan de faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde van de RuG en lid van het Expertisecentrum. Zij nam de prijs vorige week in Australië in ontvangst.
